Braedownie, Glen Doll – 15th-17th September 2023

Thanks again are due to the Carn Dearg Club for the use of their splendid Hut. It wasn’t quite as memorable as our last visit following storms Arwen and Corrie which saw devastation in the Glen and ingenuity in the Hut! The Burns Supper was perfectly cooked on the woodburning stove due to a power cut! A limited group attended this particular Meet, but the spirit of the ’45 shone through with great walks, cycles, music and merriment!

Members Attending

Ian Dale, Raymond Evenden, George Henderson, Susan Henderson, Alyn McNaughton

Friday

No walks were done on the Friday other than a brief visit to the impressive Airlie Tower by George & Susan.

A quiet night followed with the smallest ever whisky tasting taking place – 3 participants attempting to name 4 random miniatures. Suffice to say that at the late hour their palates were somewhat impaired and each was unable to differentiate between Highland, Speyside or Islay!

Saturday

Saturday saw Alyn up and away early on his low geared mountain bike to take on his own clockwise version of the 5 munros of the White Mounth. After dropping the bike after 6KM he made good progress in spite of the low cloud on the initial tops. The day improved though and after descending from Lochnagar a stiff climb back up from Loch Muick saw him enjoy a great freewheel back out to the Hut.

Ian accompanied George and Susan on the round of Dreish and Mayar, taking on the Scorrie path and descending into the magnificent Corrie Fee. The hills were clear and although the wind was bracing, they were able to enjoy the sunshine sheltered by the Cairn on each top. From seeing no-one on the Scorrie, they met many walkers on their way round, most being many years younger than the trio! Great to see so many young people out enjoying the hills!

Raymond was nursing a knee injury (a common complaint in our ageing Club) but was determined to get out into the fresh air. He had a climb up on to the Doonie crags above Braedownie along with his drone and got some great images of the lovely Glen. After which he felt that he deserved a pint at the Clova Hotel!

With Susan heading home early for family duties, she dropped George off at the Clova to meet Raymond and seek replacement refreshments which had disappeared the previous evening. What could possibly go wrong! Anyway, after a lift back up to the Hut, they enjoyed a great night with Ian and Alyn who was belting out the ’45 standards.

Sunday

Early bed and early rise saw the Hut in ship shape and the cars departing for home. Ian had a walk up by Loch Brandy, but the low cloud curtailed his intended walk somewhat. All in all another great weekend for the 45.
